Where Your Next Great Escape Begins
Here’s what we’re sipping, reading, and listening to in September 2026

You asked for a classic, so I put it to a vote—and Sense and Sensibility won, beating out Jane Eyre and Elizabeth Gaskell’s North and South. Jane Austen’s beloved novel centers on sisters Elinor and Marianne Dashwood, who couldn’t approach love, heartbreak, or life more differently: Elinor leads with reason and restraint, while Marianne gives herself fully to feeling. It’s witty, romantic, surprisingly funny, and full of the messy family dynamics, questionable men, and complicated choices that make Austen feel remarkably modern more than 200 years later.
The Book: Sense & Sensibility by Jane Austen
The Wine: Olivier Merlin Mâcon-La Roche-Vineuse Chardonnay
I landed on White Burgundy for Sense and Sensibility because it lets us play with the contrast between Elinor and Marianne, while also giving a classic novel an equally classic wine.
White Burgundy is Chardonnay at its most elegant, composed, and nuanced—very Elinor. The Olivier Merlin Mâcon La Roche Vineuse has enough texture, richness, and subtle oak to feel polished and restrained, but it still has bright fruit and freshness underneath. Marianne, meanwhile, feels more like a lively, unoaked, stainless-steel Chardonnay: expressive, vibrant, and immediate.
And there's a fun historical wink to it: Chardonnay from Burgundy is the kind of Old World wine that feels at home beside Austen. So the pairing becomes less "old book = old wine" and more two expressions of Chardonnay for two very different sisters—with our bottle landing decidedly on Team Elinor.
Can’t join the wine club, or find this bottle near you? Choose any traditional bottle of white Burgundy. All white Burgundies, by law, must be a Chardonnay! The region is known for producing this style: more rounded, with notes of vanilla and spice in addition to bright fruit.
Reserved or romantic, practical or passionate—there's room for both. This list pairs timeless folk, elegant classics, and heartfelt singer-songwriters with the quiet beauty of an English countryside. Best enjoyed with a glass of White Burgundy and someone worth writing letters to.
